Listening is such a simple act. It requires us to be present, and that takes practice, but we don’t have to do anything else. We don’t have to advise, or coach, or sound wise. We just have to be willing to sit there and listen.
Margaret J. Wheatley
I used the term preaching instead of talking in my post title, because I believe that we often times sound as if we have all the answers, the right path to jump on, the perfect choices to be made - you know - that I know what's best for you attitude.
It seems as if we are experts on everyone else's life but fall short of any attempt to pause and reflect on our own.
We've all been there, desperately in need of someone to talk to, someone to listen to us, to hear us, to feel our pain. We turn to a friend, we spill our guts, and in that moment of what seems like utter destruction, what we all crave the most, is just for that person to simply listen to us
- not judge us
-not advise us
-not analyze us
Just LISTEN to us
Listening is quite easy if ya just think about it, but how many of us can honestly say that we are great listeners? We may assume we are, yet if we pay close attention, we may see something totally different. It truly does require practice to become a good listener, so the next time a friend, co-worker or family member comes to you for an ear, consciously be aware of how well you are doing throughout the dialogue.
Did you Listen more and preach less?
I hope so
:)
